How to Help

Some things we can all do to help:

  1. Cut all the rings on the 6-pack plastics

  2. Cut the plastic seal ring from milk, medicine bottles etc.

  3. When boating, do not allow plastic bags, soda cans or bottles, plastic food wrappers, or other trash get into the waterways. Tie them in knots and dispose properly when you get to shore.

  4. Do not cut monofilament fishing line, or dispose of it in the water (it takes 600 YEARS for it to decompose!!). Not only does it harm birds, but dolphins, turtles, and fish.

  5. Don't throw your filleted fish carcass to the birds, as it can cause internal damage.

  6. If a bird gets caught in your fishing line, do not cut the line! When the bird goes back to the mangroves at night to roost, the line will get caught in the branches and the bird will slowly die. Instead, slowly and carefully bring bird to you, cover his head with a towel or hat, [not seeing you will quiet him down,] push barb (do not pull it out by the hook) of hook through the skin, cut barb off, then back out the remainder of the hook. We have materials available for proper hook extraction and handling of wildlife. Do NOT try to remove a hook from sensitive areas like eyes! Leave that to a professional.

Volunteering for SOS

SOS is always looking for good volunteers. If you are located close to the Tampa Bay - St. Petersburg area or even if you aren't, you can help!

Volunteers are especially needed in the following areas:

  • Hospital Help - working in the hospital involves helping with medications, feeding, general care, cleaning cages, ponds and facilities

  • Rescue Teams - work in the field, capturing, rescuing and transporting wildlife to the facility

  • Writing Grant Proposals - Like to write? Experienced in grant writing? We need writing and filing of applications for grant funds - (you need not be in the local area to do this...it can be done in any location in the US!)

  • Public Relations - "getting the word out" working with the media

  • Educational Programs - presenting our educational seminars to schools and groups

If you would be interested in any of these volunteer positions, please contact us! It's a rewarding activity!
