About Save Our Seabirds, Inc.

Save Our Seabirds, Incorporated (SOS) is a totally nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing injured native and migratory birds promptly, treating their injuries, and releasing rehabilitated birds back into the environment.

SOS (formerly the Pinellas Seabird Rehabilitation Center) was founded in May 1990 and received its state and federal permits to handle wildlife in October 1990. The organization received its 501(c)(3) tax exempt, nonprofit status in 1991.

Since then, SOS has cared for injured and orphaned wild birds on a daily basis. The numbers are expected to continue doubling - or even tripling - each year, as more people become aware of SOS's services and success rate. In 1993, SOS directed the highly successful wildlife recovery effort in the massive Tampa Bay oil spill of that year. SOS achieved a phenomenal success rate of returning 85% of the recovered wildlife back into their native environment, with the full expectation that they would live out their normal productive lives.
SOS works with power companies, petroleum products manufacturers, and transporters to educate them about a wildlife responder's needs prior to an environmental incident. SOS also trains volunteers for oiled wildlife response in the volunteers' home geographic areas. SOS has shared its accumulated knowledge of its highly successful oil spill recovery techniques with spills in Germany, Holland, Brazil and works with the US Environmental Protection Agency in Washington DC, along with many state, national and international organizations.
