How Can We All Help?

Some things we can all do to help:

  1. Cut all the rings on the 6 pack plastics
  2. Cut the plastic seal ring from milk, medicine bottles etc.
  3. When boating do not allow plastic bags, soda cans or bottles, plastic food wrappers get into the waterways. Tie them in knots and dispose of properly when you get to shore.
  4. Do not allow monofilament fishing line get into the water (it takes 600 YEARS for it to decompose!!). It can not only harm the birds but dolphin, turtles and fish.
  5. Don't throw your filleted fish carcass to the birds, it can cause internal damage.
  6. If a bird gets caught in your fishing line do not cut the line! When the bird goes back to the mangroves at night to roost the line will get caught in the branches and the bird will slowly die. Instead, slowly and carefully bring bird to you, cover his head with towel or hat, [not seeing you will quiet him down,] push barb of hook through the skin, cut barb off, then back out the remainder of the hook. We will try to have diagrams or pictures on how to extract a hook. There are sensitive parts such as the eyes you should not attempt to remove a hook from. Leave that to a professional.
